Caravana (2019)
"Caravana" shatters the expectations of those who come to the Festa do Rosário seeking the image of a stagnant tradition, frozen in time. The stalls have likely existed since the beginning of the festival in Serro, originally raising funds to cover the expenses of the religious festivity. As the festival grew, so did these stalls, becoming a commercial opportunity. Today, many workers travel the region during the festival, providing imported goods that are not available in local stores or offering them at lower prices. The photographs taken escape a uniform notion of what is considered, in the strict sense, the image of the festival and what deserves to be visualized.
Since the 2000s, festival vendors have been required to use pre-fabricated and standardized metal stalls, extinguishing the tradition of artisanal craftsmanship and altering the Festa do Rosário not only visually, but also in its relationship with the population. While Quermesse sought to reconnect with the tradition of the artisanal stall, Caravana (2019) not only acknowledges the change imposed by contemporaneity, but also glimpses the historical, iconographic and expressive potential of the new format, portraying the itinerant vendors who travel to Serro during the festival.
